Clinical Services Specifically for People who are Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing & Their Families
Our clinical services team includes Karli Dettman, Irene Holub and Modiule Lawson. Our team provides counselling through a range of clinical techniques to manage the following areas:
- general mental health problems
- identity issues
- relationship difficulties
- PTSD and C-PTSD
- trauma exposure, especially the six identified deaf-related traumas
- depression
- stress and anxiety
- anger
- relationship difficulties
- feeling overwhelmed and not able to cope day-to-day
- child behaviour and development
- multiple disability and its impact
Counselling is available at our Blackburn office. Karli Health Centre is also able to provide services online using Zoom™. This means that distance is not a problem – we can provide services nationwide as well as to New Zealand. Many deaf people prefer to see a Counsellor who is fluent in Auslan and so it is not necessary to use an interpreter. In fact, US research indicates that a large proportion of Deaf Americans prefer their counsellor to also be Deaf (McCullough and Duchesneau).
Clients can use our counselling services by:
• including counselling in their NDIS plan (provider number 4-EV5BTE6),
• using your employer’s EAP (Employment Assistance Program) or other such programs (e.g. Crimes Compensation),
• if applicable, applying for funding through the Family Reconciliation Mediation Program, or
• paying as a private client – private health insurance may help with the cost.
